DOT Physicals
DOT physicals for drivers are mandated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The purpose of the medical exam is to ensure that the drivers with CDL license are physically and mentally healthy to operate a commercial vehicle. A DOT physical follows strict guidelines mandated by the FMCSA, ensuring that commercial drivers and other safety-sensitive employees are in good health to work safely. A medical exam includes:
- A detailed medical history, a review of the individual’s current physical and mental health.
- Physical examination, vision and hearing checks.
- Tests for drug and alcohol use (if is necessary).
Most DOT certifications are valid for two years; however, the provider may issue a certificate for a shorter time frame if you have certain medical conditions that require monitoring. The DOT physical ensures that you are healthy enough to drive, which protects your health and the safety of others on the road.
